How to appear in ChatGPT?

Knowing that AI drives decisions is fine, but the real question is another one: how do I get ChatGPT to mention my brand when someone asks about my category? There's no magic button, but there is a set of practices that move the needle. This is the guide.

To appear in ChatGPT you need three things: that it can access your content (don't block it, and keep the content in the HTML), that your content is clear and citable (direct answer, concrete data, structure), and that you're present in the third-party sources ChatGPT consults and cites (Wikipedia, Reddit, review sites, media and comparisons). It's not instant: it's accumulated authority.

Why does your brand appear (or not) in ChatGPT?

ChatGPT builds its answers by combining two things: what it learned during training and, when it browses, what it finds on the web at that moment. In both cases it depends on the sources: if your brand isn't there —or is poorly represented— in the sites the model knows and consults, it won't appear. That's why the strategy is to be well represented in those sources.

How to appear in ChatGPT, step by step

1. Give it access to your content

Check that your robots.txt doesn't block OpenAI's crawlers (GPTBot, which feeds training, and OAI-SearchBot, which it uses for search). And make sure your content is in the initial HTML, not just loaded via JavaScript: if it's not in the HTML, for many crawlers it doesn't exist.

2. Make your content citable

ChatGPT prefers clear, self-contained content. Put the direct answer at the start, use question-style headings, add concrete data and an FAQ with schema. This is AEO, and it's the foundation for a model to be able to extract and reuse your content.

3. Be where ChatGPT looks

When it browses, ChatGPT cites sources: Wikipedia, Reddit, review sites, media, specialized forums and third-party comparisons. Earning presence in those sources —reviews, mentions, appearing in listings in your category— usually moves the needle more than optimizing only your own site.

4. Build brand authority

Make sure your brand is a clear, consistent entity across the web: same name, same category, same value proposition. Coherent profiles, listings and mentions help the model understand who you are and associate you with your category.

5. Publish original data and content

What no one else has is the most citable: your own data, studies, clear definitions, original guides. It's the best way to become a source, not just another result.

6. Publish an llms.txt

It's a file that tells AI systems which of your content is most relevant. It's not magic, but it signals a site that's prepared for AI. For the full framework, read what GEO is.

7. Measure and iterate

Your visibility in ChatGPT changes with every model update and with new content on the web. Measure which prompts you appear in and adjust. If you don't know how yet, see how to know if your brand appears in ChatGPT.

How long does it take?

It's not immediate. New content takes time to get indexed and to build authority, and model training has its own pace. Think of it like SEO: it's cumulative. Access and structure improvements show up sooner; source authority, later.

Common mistakes

  • Accidentally blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt.
  • Optimizing only your site and ignoring third-party sources.
  • Content loaded via JavaScript that the crawler can't see.
  • Expecting instant results.
  • Not measuring, and therefore not knowing what works.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT?

Not directly. Visibility is earned through presence and authority in the sources, not through paid ads.

How long does it take to work?

Weeks to months. It's cumulative, like SEO: first access and structure, then authority.

Does my current SEO help?

It helps as a foundation, but it's not enough. Add AEO (citable content) and presence in third-party sources.

Do I have to be on Reddit and Wikipedia?

They're sources AI cites often. Being well represented there, genuinely, helps it mention you.

How do I know it's working?

By measuring your visibility in ChatGPT over time, not with a one-off test.
